The artworks act as mirrors to the soul, reflecting inner fears, desires, and the inevitable passage of time.
About the photographer
Olha Oryekhova
Olha Orekhova is a multifaceted artist renowned for her mastery of wet plate collodion photography, a technique that lends her work a distinctive historical and emotive quality. With over a decade of experience, Olha has become a versatile creative force, demonstrating her artistic talents not only in photography but also as a stage director and creative producer. Her work spans high-profile films, TV series, and animation, where she seamlessly blends artistic vision with technical execution, showcasing her broad and deep artistic abilities.
Memory shapes our understanding of the world and ourselves, acting as both a bridge to the past and a lens through which we view the present. In ‘Memory Mirror,’ the exhibition reflects the universal truth that our identities are continually molded by the stories we remember and the emotions they evoke.
The artworks in “Memory Mirror” are created using the wet plate collodion process, a meticulous photographic technique from the 1850s. This method involves coating glass or metal plates with collodion, sensitizing them with silver nitrate, and exposing them while wet, requiring precise skill. The style of the artworks is rooted in Pictorialism, an artistic movement in late 19th and early 20th-century photography that sought to bring photography closer to painting and graphic art, influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau, and the Pre-Raphaelites.
Olga Oryekhova did not use Photoshop for the photographs; instead, aged silver contributes to the unique, atmospheric quality of the images. The inherent imperfections, like streaks and smudges, enhance the nostalgic and fragile aesthetic, making each piece a unique artifact. This meticulous process parallels the complexities of human memory, which can be vivid yet flawed, detailed yet fleeting.
Self-portrait
— Olha, to your opinion, what role does artistic technique play in the portrayal of memory and identity?
“The wet plate collodion process is integral to my work because it mirrors the nature of memory—delicate, nuanced, and often flawed. The meticulous and unpredictable nature of this technique allows me to capture not just an image, but a deeper essence of the subject. It adds a layer of authenticity and emotion, suggesting that just as the process requires care and attention, so too does the act of remembering and understanding our identity.”
The collection delves into the Role of Memory in shaping our reality and explores themes of Identity and Self-Reflection, prompting viewers to examine their personal narratives. It also addresses existential themes, including the confrontation with freedom and isolation, awareness of mortality and the search for meaning, encouraging a deeper understanding of our existence and individual roles.
